Scottish Towns Dunblane Cathedral - History

Dunblane's importance in history is principally due to its strategic geographical location. Situated where the main roads from the north, the south and the east converge the parish saw many armies march both north and south, to and from many battles. The parish itself however has a peaceful and largely uneventual history, the only battle within its boundaries being the Battle of Sheriffmuir in 1715.

It is believed that the Christian Saint Blane established the Celtic church here in about 600AD. The first catherdral however was established by Bishop Clement (1233-58).
After the Reformation the cathedral stood roofless and neglected for over 300 years until eventually, toward the closing years of the 19th century, there was an extensive restoration programme.
This restoration work uncovered an ancient Celtic Cross that was later placed within the cathedral.
