| Lochearnhead |
|
Situated at the western end of the loch, near the junction of the A85 and the A84 Crianlarich road, Lochearnhead is an idyllic setting. This tranquil and particularly scenic area has been witness to many exciting chapters in Scotland's bloody clan history involving the Stewarts, MacGregors, McDonalds of Glencoe, MacNabs, Drummonds, Neishes and McLarens to name but a few!
Whilst it hosts a wide selection of water sports, swimming in some spots can
be dangerous due to the loch bed dropping almost vertically within feet of the
shore - visitors wishing to swim should enquire locally about safe areas.
Earn means "Irish" so Loch Earn becomes "Loch of the Irish" or it could simply have been named after Lough Erne in Ireland, whence originated the settlers in the area. Strathearn means the broad valley of the River Earn, which of course flows out of the Loch at St. Fillans.
