Flora & Wildlife of Killin

Given the fragile nature and delicate balance of much of our natural heritage it is perhaps wise to begin this brief section with a reminder that you should never pick any of the wild plants you see. You may be commiting an offence by doing so but it is also better that you leave all wild plants to flourish in their natural habitat for everyone to enjoy.

Ben Lawers is a Mecca for both professional and amateur botanists because of its alpine flora....
  • Stag's Horn Clubmoss (Lycopodium clavatum)
  • Holly Fern (Polystichum lonchitis)
  • Green Spleenwort (Asplenium viride)
  • Alpine Lady Fern (Athyrium distentifolium)
  • Fir Clubmoss (Huperzia selago)
..... to name but a few!

Ben Lawers also provides a fascinating array of wildlife. Whilst walking on the mountain keep your eyes open for both red and roe deer, the brown and the mountain hare, stoats, weasels and foxes.
Birdlife is also abundant in this area. The lower slopes have pied and grey wagtails, dippers and short-eared owls whilst on the higher slopes you may be fortunate enough to spot an eagle, buzzard, ptarmigan or occasionally a peregrine falcon.
