he restored lint Mill (now a house) stands testament as the last edifice of
the great mill builder Ewan Cameron of Lawers (1705-1817).
Cameron, a mill wright, was the first to introduce spinning wheels and jack reels into the Highlands. He built mills all over the Highlands and constructed the first mills north of the Forth for shelling barley. All that remains of the village itself (once a thriving little community) are a couple of mansion houses, a few cottages and the old smiddy.
ashlie is where the legendary Celtic war hero, Fingal, was said to have four
castles. His son Ossian, a famous bard, recounted his father's mighty deeds:
"12 castles had Fionn, in the dark bent glen of stones" (Glen Lyon).
The remains of only 5 can be seen today, 4 at Cashlie, close to Loch Lyon at
the western point of the Glen. The walls of one of these forts are between 12
and 14 feet thick. Another, at Cambuslaie, is unusual in structure in that
within the perimeter are two more circular structures with the centre one a
solid block of masonry 13 feet thick.
len Lyon is again 'Cleann Fasoch' (deserted). Young people have left to
learn trades in the south or overseas. Evictions and forced farm amalgamations
made way for the vast sheep walks. Today the Glen is near bare of its
indigenous peoples.
