Lady Mary's Walk

Length: 3 miles Height climbed: Negligible Grade: C Parking: Taylor Park Toilet facilities: Crieff (James Square) This walk was created by the laird of Ochtertyre and was the favourite walk of his daughter, Lady Mary Murray. It is still as popular today, providing the opportunity for a leisurely wander by the banks of the River Earn. The walk begins from the bridge in Taylor Park. If commencing from the town centre follow West High Street - which leads off James Square and turn right onto Comrie Street. Cross the road just before the War Memorial and proceed westwards down Milnab Street towards Taylor Park (1 mile). Turn left at the end of the bridge and follow the path along the River Turret and through a swing-gate before turning right along the bank of the Earn. In 200 yards, Lady Mary's Walk begins - a beautiful beech-lined avenue that hugs the river bank for a mile and then forks. The left-hand fork leads to Baird's Monument, an obelisk erected by his widow in 1832 in memory of Sir David Baird, a hero of the Indian wars. The right fork leads back to Crieff along a farm road and emerges in a housing estate. Turn right at the Oakbank Inn and you return to the starting point. Last updated November 1999
