Height climbed: 438ft./134m Grade: B Parking: Blairgowrie Toilet facilities: Wellmeadow, Blairgowrie This walk takes you through the outskirts of the town and on up the Knockie - a small hill which is actually the last foot hill of the Grampian range at this point on the Highland Line. The path starts at Newton Street, which turns up the hill from the A93 road to Perth. Carry straight on up this street before turning left where the houses end, just beyond Newton Castle (a large, white, 16th century building which is the home of the Chief of Clan MacPherson). Beyond the castle a path leads straight up the hill, passing between fields close to Maryfield Farm. Beyond this, near the top of the hill, there is a seat where you can enjoy the splendid views of Strathmore. Beyond this again there is an indicator naming some of the more important points in the landscape, such as the Sidlaw Hills. The path becomes a little narrower (and muddier when damp) for a while, until it reaches a junction at a surfaced road. (If you turn left here for a short way you will be rewarded with some fine views of the hills above Dunkeld). However, to continue your walk, turn right until you reach the road from Blairgowrie to Lornty Bridge. Turn right again and continue on this road, with the River Ericht at the foot of the slope to your left, until you reach Blairgowrie. (Alternatively, turn left to Lornty Bridge which will lead you back to Blairgowrie via the Banks of the Ericht). |
