Lair Atholl is a pleasing combination of tourist centre and village, situated
at the junction of the Tilt and Garry rivers. Glen Tilt, which eventually
connects with Deeside, is famous for the beauty of its scenery, at first
heavily wooded but later becoming dramatic and precipitous. It is also a well
known glen for its marble in shades of light grey and green.
or a small village, Blair Atholl offers the visitor a wealth of attractions,
together with a good range of Hotels, Guest Houses and Bed & Breakfast. (Take
a look at our
accommodation). There is a working
Corn Mill, a Country Museum, Churches and an interesting array of shops.
ake a look at St Bride's Church,
well worth a visit in its own right but also for the fact that "Bonnie Dundee"
(John Graham of Claverhouse), who lost his life at the Battle of
Killiecrankie, is buried here.
Just three miles south of Blair Atholl you will find The Soldier's Leap, where a dramatic escape was made during the battle. There is also a Visitor Centre (by the National Trust for Scotland) where you can enjoy a "hands-on" experience of natural history exhibits, models and maps giving full details of the battle.
ee how our ancestors made the delicious oatmeal which was Scotland's staple
diet at the Blair Atholl
Water Mill
and Tea Room.
Visit the Atholl Country Collection, a unique folk museum with interesting, lively displays of village and country life of days gone by. For an interesting collection of ornamental metalwork, look in at the Old Smiddy in the town itself (Showroom and Workshop). |
