The northern end of this walk starts just outside Kenmore on the A827 road to Aberfeldy. There is a sharp bend and a small road heading along the south side of Loch Tay breaks away from the main road.
Turn onto this road and, just as it begins, a third road branches off uphill - this is the one to follow. The route zig-zags past some houses and through a small wood before continuing to rise steadily across open moorland, finally reaching its highest point after some three miles. From here you have marvellous views to the north of the hills around Glen Lyon and the Tay and Tummel valleys. At this height the hills appear bare of all but heather, but as the road continues and you drop steeply into Glen Quaich, the valley bottom becomes gradually more cultivated.

About two miles beyond the bridge at Garrow, the route divides. A footpath of some three miles re-crosses the river and passes down the north-east side of Loch Freuchie, while the road continues down the south-west side. The two paths ultimately arrive at opposite ends of the small hamlet of Amulree; once an important staging point for Highland cattle drovers on their way to the Crieff market.

Amulree may be used as the starting point for a circular walk of some 7.5 miles around the loch.
