photograph of Crail to follow he ancient and charming little town of Crail is the most easterly of Fife's fishing ports and has always been a magnet to those who prefer the peace and tranquility it offers.
Although a very small town, Crail has an extremely impressive history, its royal charter being granted by Robert the Bruce in 1310. This charter gave the people of Crail the right to trade on the Sabbath, which may explain why 200 years later John Knox chose Crail parish church as the venue for his most violent of sermons!

t may surprise the visitor to learn that this pretty little east coast town was trading successfully with the Continent as early as the 9th century. Traces of this link between Crail and the Continent can still be seen in some of the town's architecture. Town Hall was built in 1814 by John Corstorphine, whose work can be seen in many of the towns and villages throughout Fife, but the bell is of a much earlier date and is Dutch in origin.

olfers will find Crail an absolute delight as it is home to one of the oldest clubs in the world - the Balcomie Links. If you are a golfer and would love to play the many courses throughout the Kingdom of Fife, you will find Crail an excellent base.
