he town of Melrose was originally a tiny village by the name of Fordel
and did not that it achieved town
status.
Melrose Abbey, which attracts thousands of visitors to the town each year, was founded by David I in 1136 and is considered (despite it now being a ruin) to be the most beautiful in the country! It is within the ruined walls of Melrose Abbey that the heart of Scotland's King Robert Bruce now rests and you can read about the Abbey in more detail in our dedicated history section.
t one time almost all the Borders towns and villages were linked by train
services (with Melrose station opening 1849) but those days have long gone.
Melrose however still retains its splendid Victorian station which has now
been converted to a fine restaurant, of which Melrose has many.
Melrose is also home to an excellent Motor Museum. Situated opposite the Abbey this fine collection of vintage cars and motor cycles attracts a steady stream of visitors to the town. |
