ituated by the rivers Tweed and Teviot, Kelso is a busy and very
attractive market town surrounded by the scenic rolling landscapes of the
Border country - Sir Walter Scott considered Kelso to be one of the most
beautiful and romantic towns in all Scotland!
There are, given the relatively small size of this Borders town, a surprising number of very impressive structures, including Ednam House with its elegant Italian ceilings and the magnificent Floors Castle, which you can read about in more detail in our dedicated history section.
he greatest of all architectural attractions of this area are the ruined
remains of Kelso Abbey. Long believed to be a relatively small abbey, it is
now (due to a description found in the Vatican Library) widely held to have
been a massive structure and most likely the largest of all the Border abbeys.
Founded by King David I in 1128 it stood for over 400 years before it was
destroyed in 1545. Kelso Abbey was unique in Scotland because of its many
Norman architectural features.
he handsome stone bridge across the Tweed at Kelso was built by John Rennie
in 1800. Some ten years later the much larger Waterloo Bridge (spanning the
river Thames in London) was built, using the Kelso bridge as a model.
