ituated on the Leader Water in the beautiful Lauderdale valley, Earlston (at
one time Ercidoune) is known far and wide as the birthplace of Sir
Thomas Learmount or Thomas the Rhymer. Just south of the town stands
the 'Rhymer's Tower', where Sir Thomas was born. The Tower was purchased in
1895 by the Edinburgh Borderers' Association.
he town square in Earlston was originally laid out with a rose garden to
commemorate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.
Earlston church, built in 1892, has some very interesting headstones and within the church itself there is a small stone (taken from a former church) which states the following: "Auld Rymr's Race Lies in this Place". short distance to the north of Earlston lies the little village of Legerwood,
known principally for its church with the Norman chancel and arch. Its
remarkable preservation is due to the Ker family having blocked up this
section of the church. It was uncovered again in the closing years of the
19th century and fully restored.
