ituated in the old county of Roxburghshire, the building now known as
Abbotsford House was the home of Sir Walter Scott - Scotland's most prolific
writer of novels and poetry, in particular the Border ballads. It is well
known that Scott had a passion for verifying the detail used in much of his
work, which gives even his romantic ballads that air of realism.
cott purchased the relatively small farm house named Cartley Hole in 1811,
together with its surrounding lands, and set about creating the imposing
baronial mansion we can see today. Visitors are attracted to this fine house
by the river Tweed where Sir Walter's rooms remain exactly as they were when
he penned many of his most famous works, including his personal library of
over 20,000 rare books.
