his little Angus village is perhaps best known historically for it's
association with the William Shakespeare play MacBeth. It is a visually
pleasing village and is also known for the fairy-tale like Glamis Castle,
where Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother spent much of her childhood.
lthough the present castle dates from the 17th century there is evidence of a
much earlier structure having existed on this site. The earlier structure may
well have been some form of royal residence as the lands of Glamis had been
granted to the Earls of Strathmore (the Lyon family) in the late 1300's by
King Robert II.
n the village itself can be seen the Kirkwynd Cottages, now in the care
of the National Trust for Scotland. These cottages were restored by the Trust
in 1957 and now house an impressive collection of items (considered one of
the finest in Scotland) reflecting the day to day lives of the country folk
of this area over the past 200 years.
The collection was that of Lady Maitland of Burnside and it was gifted to the Trust in the early 1970's. |
