reated a royal burgh in 1641, Brechin is set in the very heart of the lush
and fertile lands of Strathmore and not surprisingly it has a very long and
fascinating history.
It was here in 1296 that John Balliol handed the realm of Scotland to the Bishop of Durham that he might present it to his master, King Edward I (Hammer of the Scots).
he little cathedral here (now the parish church) is mainly 13th century, although
it stands on the site of a much older structure; a Culdee abbey.
During restoration work several interesting features were unearthed, including the remains of an old tower built by Bishop Black some time in the middle decades of the 14th century. The round tower of the church (over 80ft high) is believed to date from at least the 11th century. It is of particular interest because its design is very much of Celtic origin, found mostly in Ireland and less commonly in Scotland but nowhere else in the world.
rechin castle stands near to its church and was originally well fortified,
indicating an extremely turbulent past, particularly during the campaigns of
King Edward I (the Hammer of the Scots).
The castle was rebuilt in the early 18th century, the seat of the Earl of Dalhousie. |
