photograph to follow ranted burgh status in 1550, the town of Portsoy looks out across the North Sea from its Old Harbour, where a bustling trade was done throughout the 19th century when the herring fleets would come and go.
The dawning of the 20th century brought a decline in Portsoy's maritime importance but the town rallied to the new challenges by working hard to become a fine coastal holiday resort. The buildings around the old harbour were renovated, the work attracting both a Civil Trust Commendation and a Saltire Society Award.

t was Lord Boyne (Patrick Ogilvie) who developed the port, principally for the exporting of Portsoy marble and a healthy trade was done with France (Louis XIV used Portsoy marble in the construction of two of the chimney pieces for the Palace of Versailles).

his is an ideal base from which to explore the surrounding area, where the coastal scenery can be breathtaking. There are also some very pretty and extremely pictureque villages, such as the tiny fishing village of Sandend a few miles to the west, with some fine sandy beaches along the way.
